Featured Artist of the Week: Sun Sessions

Sun Sessions

What are your band member’s names?
Mauricio Enriquez (Guitar/Vocals)
Miguel Morales (Guitar)
Robert Vazquez (Bass)
Diego Arca (Drums)

How and when did the band start?
Miguel and I (Mauricio) were in a band before Sun Sessions. When our old band started drifting apart we kept getting together to work on songs. We realized we needed some more people to flesh out the songs and I invited Robert to join us and play bass with us. He had a friend that played the drums so we invited him over to listen to some songs. He played the drums, we dug what he was playing and we asked him to join the band.

Where are you located?
We’re currently based out of Fontana, CA.

What genre would you place your music in?
I guess if we had to narrow it down we’d be considered Indie rock. We don’t set out to make songs in any one genre we just make music that we like.

What are your musical and non-musical influences?
I think we all have pretty different musical influences. We all have some shared influences like The Strokes, Nirvana, Interpol, and Foals but then we all have other influences that are more specific to each member. Some of us like other stuff like Metal, Electronic, Hip Hop and things like that.
As far as non-musical influences go I think just about anything serves as an influence. Things that go from the people you meet, to films, to just about anything.

What are your dreams and goals?
We would like to get to a point where we can make music for a living. Spending all our time writing music for everyone to listen to and enjoy. We want to be able to take these songs to people in different countries and have them enjoy what we are making. Seeing people connect with the music and giving them an outlet to relax and get away from the day to day norm.

Who writes the songs and what topics do you like to touch on?
All four of us contribute to the songwriting process. That can range from the music to the lyrics to the overall feel and sound of the song. A song can start from a bass line, a drumbeat, or a chord progression then we all collaborate and shape the song in a way that we all like.
We write about relationships, ambitions, frustrations, and anything else that someone is experiencing at the moment. Sometimes we title our songs before they have lyrics and we use those names and write about the situations that pertain to those titles.

What inspires you to make music?
Music is everything. It drives us to places that nothing else can. Having the ability to do that for others is what inspires us to make music.

What do you want your fans or potential fans to know about you?
We want them to know that we make music because it’s what we love to do and we hope that they enjoy the music we make as much as we do.

Do you have any upcoming events?
Not at the moment but we’re working towards getting to that point.

Where can fans buy your music/merch?
We don’t have merch available at the moment.
As for our music we have our new EP, Errors available as a free download at our bandcamp:

Futures

What are your band member’s names?
Robby Atkinson | Rhythm Guitar/Vocals
Cody McLeish | Lead Guitar/Backing Vocals
Jon Dolan | Bass

How and when did the band start?
The band started as a two piece about a year ago. Robby and Cody had worked together in a band prior to Futures. They began writing the material and then entered the studio to track the EP. Jon joined the band later on and we couldn’t be more excited about the contributions and energy he adds to the group

Where are you located?
Montclair, New Jersey

What genre would you place your music in?
Alternative Rock

What are your musical and non-musical influences?
Robby – For me, I am influenced by jazz. My dad, who has always been a driving influence, would always play Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea when I was younger. Beyond jazz, bands that have played a huge role in shaping my music are bands from the late ’90s, early ’00s, like Blink 182, Copeland, Death Cab For Cutie and The Early November. I also pull influences from Flood of Red and Incubus, but, to be honest, I try to be open and receptive to everything; influence come from everywhere.

Cody – I grew up listening to all kinds of music. One fond memory I have from my childhood is sitting in the backseat of my fathers blue Chevy Suburban, listening to tapes of Eric Clapton, James Taylor, and The Police. These artists have shaped my guitar playing. In terms of newer music and material, I’m a huge fan of Coheed and Cambria, Taking Back Sunday, and Artifex Pereo.

Jon – Any bands that are genuine about what they create and represent. Some of my biggest influences have ranged from bands like Underoath and Architects, to Young the Giant, and Taking Back Sunday.

What are your dreams and goals?
Our goals are the same: to make music for the rest of our lives, even more so than we already have. We want to play music that makes people feel the way that we do when we listen to a song that we all love.

Who writes the songs and what topics do you like to touch on?
Robby writes songs in multiple different perspectives. He draws inspiration from his own experiences and the experiences of people around him. He chooses topics that are relatable, so that the listener can find at least one song that they can connect to on a personal level. “The Things We Leave Behind” is about recovering from an ended relationship and highlights the realization and acceptance of moving on. Robby usually comes up with a skeleton to the song, which is brought to the table for the rest of the band to write their own parts.

What inspires you to make music?
Robby – Music is a connection and universal link that we all share. It’s a form of communication that we all understand. It evokes emotion and feelings we have all felt or can relate to. It’s a type of relationship you build with your fans that is completely different than anything else. Creating this connection with people is what inspires me.

Cody – Being able to communicate and connect with the world through song is truly what inspires me.

Jon – Seeing how strong music can be as type of guidance in young people’s lives is inspiring. Music changed the course of my life as a kid. The feeling of playing live is something that cannot be replicated otherwise.

What do you want your fans or potential fans to know about you?
We want everyone to know that we’re all just a bunch of humble guys who love to play music and will never be too cool to simply hangout or share a conversation.

Do you have any upcoming events?
None as of yet, but much is in the works! You can follow our various social media outlets to keep up to date with everything Futures.

Featured Artist of the Week: REPS

REPS

REPS

What are your band member’s names?
Colton Bockes (Vocals), Mike Till (Bass), Jordan Foehner (Guitar) & Steve Koch (Drums).

How and when did the band start?
The band started a little over a year ago. Mike and I (Jordan) had been playing in our Alt Rock/Pop-Punk band Storm The Bay for years. Things were starting to wind down with STB and we wanted to embark on a new experience. We recruited former STB drummer and longtime good Steve Koch and we just started cranking out ideas in my dining room. We knew Colt from the early STB days because he and Steve grew up together. I knew he had a great voice but even better, he had the attitude, energy and drive this band required in a front man. It only made sense he’d join.

Where are you located?
Rochester, New York (UPSTATE REPRESENT!)

What genre would you place your music in?
I hate genres in a sense but if I have to pick one, I’d call it Groove Metal with a Hardcore twist.
No one’s used the term “Groove Metal” in years so we’re bringing it back.

What are your musical and non-musical influences?
Oh man…where to begin??? Our musical tastes are just about everywhere. I get down to artists and bands from Justin Timberlake & Bruno Mars to Turnstile and Trapped Under Ice. Off the top of my head I would say Every Time I Die, Rush, Pantera, Poison The Well, Coheed & Cambria & Jimmy Eat World are some of my personal favorites. Bands like The Dangerous Summer, Norma Jean & Rage Against The Machine are huge influences too. We try to incorporate as much as we can into our own music; I feel it helps us stand out a little bit more.

As far as nonmusical influences I’d say the big old thing called Life is one of our bigger inspirations. We talk about what we see and how we feel. The amount of anger we have built up equates to the amount of love we have for our friends and family. It’s a crazy world we live in and we just want to express our point of view through our music.

What are your dreams and goals?
Honestly, we’d love to be able to create and perform music full time…without going absolutely broke in the process. I know I know…we’re reaching for the stars.

Who writes the songs and what topics do you like to touch on?
It’s been a pretty collective effort. Steve is a really great lyricist (Neil Peart Style) and actually wrote some riffs for the EP we released last winter. Colt and I have been tag teaming lyrics as well for the upcoming REPS full length which has been a unique experience. Over all, I’d say it’s a collective effort. Everyone has ideas, some better than others, but we work together to try and make them a somewhat cohesive structure. We tell one another when something sounds great or not so great, no feelings hurt.

The topics we touch upon are a little more on the political side sometimes. I don’t want us to be labeled a “Political” band because we’re not; we’re just musicians who see the world from our little window. This world is so fucking crazy sometimes that it makes me wonder if it’ll even exist for my children or grandchildren to be a part of it.

What inspires you to make music?
Nothing else in this world gives us the freedom and pure satisfaction that creating music does. Mike can install your new Hot Water Heater, Steve analyzes your bodily fluids if you’re sick, Colt will detail your brand new Porche 911 and I can sell you Ad time for a radio station but none of these things really compare to what music does for us.

What do you want your fans or potential fans to know about you?
I’d like them to know we’re 100% ourselves. We don’t wear makeup, we don’t have a gimmick. The clothes we wear when we play are most likely the clothes we woke up from our drunken stupor in. We’re honest and we mean what we say.

Do you have any upcoming events?
We do! This Friday (July 10th) we’re playing Staten Island’s annual Summer Slam with a ton of awesome bands from all over the tristate area. At the end of the month we have a hometown show with our good friends in Such Gold at Bug Jar as well.

Where can fans buy your music/merch?
We’ve been making our own merch for each show we’ve been playing so I guess your best best to grab a shirt or a tank top would be to come to a show! Our EP “Own Your Mind” is available on our bandcamp page for free as well, www.repsroc.bandcamp.com.

Jonathan Timmes – Photography Alessandro Pautasso – Digital Illustration

ShadowHill

What are your band member’s names?
Lee Randall

How and when did the band start?
I reached an artistic fork in the road after being lead singer/guitarist in some punk and screamy bands. My main criteria for my new songs was if I was flipping around XM radio and heard this, would it stop me dead in my tracks? Over the next several years from about 2010 forward, I went on a kind of songwriter’s visionquest to find my true voice. All of that lead up to recording “Last Resort.”

Where are you located?
Washington, DC.

What genre would you place your music in?
Rock/Pop Rock. Postmodern arena rock? Let’s stick with rock;)

What are your musical and non-musical influences?
At my core I am informed by a pop sensibility – melody and lyricism are paramount. Beach Boys, the Beatles, Nirvana, plus punk like the Ramones, Agent Orange, Dickies, Bad Religion, Offspring, Green Day. There are some artists like Elliott Smith, Weezer, Islands and The Knife that I always return to.
I suppose if you maintain the ‘beginner’s mind’, anything can be a non-musical influence. I’m especially influenced by current events, how I feel when I see the earth being destroyed, and film.

What are your dreams and goals?
I’m aiming for the sun in every way. I’ve been told my music has a cinematic quality, so film/tv placements are on my mind. But on a basic level, I want to make a contribution to song while giving people music that touches them, something they feel is special and resonant to them.

Who writes the songs and what topics do you like to touch on?
So far, I write all the music and words. A lot of my songs are about heartbreak, loss, addiction, love, and what it is to be a human right now today. That’s what I know…For now;) I’ll let you know when I know more lol.

What inspires you to make music?
The belief that it’s my calling and that I have something to say. When you have that kind of belief, there’s a fine line between inspiration and manic compulsion. I’m most inspired by the power of music and the effect it can have on the world.

What do you want your fans or potential fans to know about you?
That I’m being pure and honest with you instead of saying what I think anyone wants to hear. That you’re getting the genuine article with all my music. What else – I don’t eat meat. And I’m obsessed with synthesizers.

Do you have any upcoming events?
Right now I’m working on some super exciting new songs, planning to go back in the studio later this year. I’m also starting to look for band members to play live.

Where can fans buy your music/merch?
Lots going on right now. A little later this summer, the album will be up on iTunes as a Mastered for iTunes download, plus places like Amazon, Spotify, and Bandcamp. A limited edition of some gorgeous CD digipaks with poster inserts will be out as well. For now you can check out tracks at soundcloud.com/shadowhill and follow @shadow_hill.
